“Australia’s Offshore Detention Damages Asylum Seekers Because Its Supposed To” 19 January 2015, The Guardian

Thank-you Melissa Parke

RAPBS applauds Fremantle MP The Hon Melissa Parke for reading voices from the black sites into the parliamentary record and for alluding to our Out of Sight Not Out of Mind campaign.

‘Speaker, there is no constructive reason why we continue to indefinitely lock-up people seeking refuge; why the offshore detention centres which have caused so much mental and physical harm have never been properly administered or subject to independent oversight; why they continue to operate as a kind of Pacific gulag, out-of-sight, out-of-mind. The only motivation appears to be punishment for the ‘offence’ of exercising their legal right to claim asylum in Australia mixed with pure politics.’
